Building Amazon based affiliate niche websites is a great way to make money and live the laptop lifestyle, but there’s no denying that there is a massive learning curve that comes along with building a successful business.
Even as easy as it is to start making money through the Amazon’s affiliate programs, many people come to find out that their earnings levels aren’t quite what they had originally hoped for when they started building the site.
In their excitement, most people forget to stop and look at the smaller details that go into making a site produce substantially more income. Today, we’re going to help you plug the gaps and make your Amazon based niche websites generate even more revenue.
Below are 10 different ways you can plug the leaks, generate more clicks to Amazon, and quickly and effectively generate more sales.
#1 – Not Ranking #1 in Google and Bing
While most of the tips we’re providing can be implemented with your current traffic levels, there is one quick way that you can increase the traffic to your site which will, in turn, generate even more sales for you each month.
If you have keywords ranked near the bottom of the first page of the major search engines or, even worse, on the second or third pages, you’re closer to increasing revenue than you may think. Pushing these keywords higher up the search results will give you a bigger portion of this traffic.
When you spend time sending more links to the pages that aren’t ranking as well as they should be, you’ll end up receiving more traffic and in turn generate even more revenue when you implement the remainder of the tips in this post. Pushing these pages up the search results could be as easy as adding new keywords onto the page that you’re ranking for, but haven’t actually targeted, or it could require you to send more keyword targeted links to the page.
If the page is already making money, you could even benefit from hiring a link builder to start moving it up the rankings. This allows you to focus on creating new content and targeting other keywords.
When you’re able to move the keywords from the bottom of the first page or top of the second page into the top 3 of the search results, your traffic levels will dramatically increase, giving you even more opportunities to increase your conversion rates and bottom-line revenue.
#2 – Not Linking at Every Opportunity
Another area where people tend to drop the ball is how they link to Amazon inside of the content that they’ve created. Many people create the piece of content, then wait until the end to link over to Amazon. This provides only one chance to earn commissions.
You may not need to go through each piece of content you’ve created and added links to the products that you’re promoting. This may actually have adverse effects if you do it wrong. However, there are ways you can add a few links to each piece of content that’s making you money and actually increase your conversion rates.
A great optimization is to add links to any image on the page, linking to the product you’re promoting on Amazon. Many people click on images, and if you’re linking to Amazon, you’re giving yourself another opportunity to make money.
Then, you’ll want to make sure that you have a true call to action at the end of the post, telling your visitors that they can click the link to purchase the products you’ve just featured.
Finally, you can add clever sections, such as comparison tables, to give your readers even more options than what they’ve looked at by viewing the post itself.
The end goal is to ensure that your visitors are able to easily find their way from your content onto Amazon. Linking to Amazon throughout various parts of your content is an easy way to increase your affiliate revenue without increasing your site’s traffic.
#3 – Not Funneling People Through your Site
If you stop and look at where the links coming into your site are pointing, you will probably find out that they’re not actually linking to the content you’ve set up with the specific purpose of making money. It’s can be very difficult to generate links directly to the content that is designed to drive affiliate conversions.
Thankfully, you don’t have to specifically link to the posts you want to rank to get picked up by the major search engines. Instead, you can send links to other pieces of content on your site (including the homepage) and let the overall strength of the site rank the posts that are designed to make you money higher in the search rankings.
That presents a problem, though, because you may have pieces of content on your site that generate a ton of traffic and have a massive number of links pointing to them but still don’t actually increase the amount of money you make each month. The best thing to do in situations like this is to funnel the traffic coming into those posts to other posts on your site that are created to generate sales on Amazon. There are two different ways to do this:
- Add a few internal links throughout the post that link to the pages you want to make money from. Doing this will help increase the strength of those posts which will also help increase their rankings and move a few visitors over.
- The second and most effective method is to add “calls to action” throughout the posts that will let people know they can click the links and learn more about products that may be related to the piece of content that they’re currently reading.
While these two methods may not produce the same conversion rates that the specific revenue-generating posts are going to have when people land on them through the search engines, you will generate more sales than you’re currently generating by losing people that have finished reading a post that isn’t specifically designed to earn money.
#4 – Not Collecting Email Addresses
Depending on the niche you’re targeting, collecting your visitor’s email address isn’t always straightforward. However, if there’s one way to protect your income and ensure that Google can’t eliminate your business with the update to their algorithm, it’s building your email list.
One of the best ways to collect email addresses on small Amazon based niche websites is to offer a contest or give away one of the products that you’re promoting. If people coming into your website are already interested in purchasing one of the products you’re promoting, they’re probably going to be inclined to trade their email address for a chance to win one of the products for free.
After you collect your visitor’s email address, you can deliver them an automated sequence of emails pushing them to other pieces of content on your site that they may find helpful. Later, when you release new content you can send out a broadcast email to all of the subscribers on your list and drive them back to the site without relying on Google or Bing for the return traffic.
Since Google has become known for wiping out niche website businesses with an algorithm update, figuring out how you can entice your visitors to give you their email address is one of the best ways to future-proof your sites. It even increases the value of your site should you ever decide to sell.
#5 – Not “Globalizing” your Amazon Links
When you get your traffic from the major search engines, all of your visitors may not necessarily be based out of the United States or the United Kingdom. That’s great for helping you make money but, unfortunately, Amazon won’t pay you for visits that aren’t based in the country where you’ve created your account.
For instance, if you are based out of the United Kingdom and signed up for an Associates account through amazon.co.uk, you aren’t going to get paid for visitors that reside in the US and order products through a link on your website.
The only way to get around this is to serve up different links based on the country that your visitor resides in, so in the previous example, you would have links pointing to amazon.com instead of amazon.co.uk. By sending visitors to the proper Amazon website, you’ll get credit for the sales that you’ve made and won’t be locked out from sales you should have already been credited for.
There are a few different services that can help you “globalize” the links you have pointing towards Amazon, but one of the best (even if we are a bit biased) is Genius Link. By using Genius Link on your site, you’ll be able to automatically swap out which Amazon platform the links are pointing to based on the country where your visitor is located.
This is a great way to uncover new income on your site and increase its revenue without actually increasing the amount of traffic you have coming into it. It’s also a great way to legitimize your business income and make it more reliable.
#6 – Not Using Comparison Content
Most content that people create for their niche sites is focused on promoting a single product. Very rarely will people risk losing a sale by promoting more than one different product on the same piece of content. The logic behind promoting a single product is sound because you typically do not want to distract your visitors away from what they’re looking for, and it’s a lot easier to create content that promotes a single product versus one that’s promoting multiple different products. However, promoting multiple products at the same time can actually lead to your content generating even more revenue than what is possible by promoting a single product on the post.
There are plugins available that allow you to create a table of different products that will help give your visitor options. When you give them options and properly review each product that you’re promoting, your conversion rates can actually increase. People are looking to purchase a product to solve a problem, and those problems aren’t always the same. One product may speak directly to their problems while others miss the mark.
The copy that you use to promote the products can help speak to how well they’re able to solve certain problems, but casting a wide net with different products and multiple versions of copy (through each product review on the same page) ensures your content will resonate with more people landing on the post.
#7 – Not Focusing on the Bestsellers List
One surefire way to find products to promote that you know are going to sell is to use Amazon’s Best Sellers list. By creating content around products that are in Amazon’s Bestseller’s list, you’re actually opening the door to ranking for keywords that you may not have considered targeting. Often the search volumes on these types of keywords (product names, specifically) are so low that they do not register in Google’s Keyword Planner. However, this also means that the competition levels are incredibly low, making it easy for you to rank for these keywords for high converting users. When a person types a specific product name into the search engines, they’re usually looking for a review that will tell them whether or not they should purchase a specific product.
Even though the search volumes may not be high enough to register in Google’s Keyword Planner, you’re going to end up ranking for multiple variations of the product name which means that you’ll add a trickle of traffic for various different keywords.
When the keywords convert as well as specific product names do, you don’t need a huge amount of traffic to start adding new income each month. It’s not unheard of for product title based keywords and content to convert more than 40% of the visitors that land on the page into making a sale. Very few types of content or keywords can deliver those types of conversion rates, and very few keywords are as easy to compete for as product titles.
#8 – Not Tracking your Affiliate Links
If you aren’t currently tracking your affiliate link clicks, you’re operating blind and are leaving a huge amount of money on the table. Not understanding which links people are clicking, which pages are producing an income, and which pieces of content you’ve created are responsible for keeping your business floating is a common mistake among Amazon affiliates.
Because it introduces some extra work, it’s easy to see why many affiliates don’t track their links. Putting in this extra work can set you apart from less successful affiliates by allowing you to identify exactly what efforts are producing results.
There are two different ways you can track what’s happening on your site. The most effective way to track what’s going on when a visitor clicks a link on your site is to create separate tracking IDs inside of the Amazon’s dashboard. By creating individual IDs for each page on your site, you’ll know specifically which pages are generating income and which products people are purchasing after they click a link on that page.
However, if your site is large and full of content or you run multiple different niche sites, you may find that creating individual tracking IDs for each page can be a logistical nightmare. For these situations, you can use a plugin like Pretty Links or Genius Link’s tracking tags feature to create individual tracking IDs and properly manage them.
#9 – Not Tapping into High Converting Keywords
If your website has any type of history and you can look into the Analytics to see which types of keywords are converting well for you, you’re going to notice a couple different things.
“Best” and “Review” type keywords typically perform better than more basic, generic keywords. When a customer types the words “best” or “review” into the search engines, they’re specifically looking for which product they should buy. If you don’t have content specifically tailored to these types of keywords you may be leaving huge amounts of money on the table. It may not even be necessary to create new content around these keywords. In fact, updating existing content on your site to cater to these types of keywords can be an easy way to capitalize on these keywords. if you have content that could be re-purposed as a “best of” guide or aren’t using the keyword “review” in posts that contain products you’re promoting, simply updating the title of the blog post is a great way to start showing up for the additional keywords.
Since the content already has age and is ranking for other keywords in the major search engines, you’ll start showing up for the “best” and “review” type keywords sooner than you would if you were to create an additional piece of content. Don’t let that stop you from creating new content that’s specifically purposed to target these types of keywords. Even if it takes you a couple months to start ranking for them, you’ll be planting the seed for additional income that will pay dividends later.
#10 – Not Using Heat Mapping Software
Heat mapping software dissects your website and figures out where people are clicking on links, and where they stopped reading to leave the site. Using it on your site will help you figure out where people are clicking around (showing that they’re looking for a link to purchase a product) and where you’re losing them. When it’s installed, you can look for areas where you’re losing visitors and start to dissect the area of the site to figure out what may be happening.
One of the best heat map scripts you can install on your site is called Clicky. It works on top of your standard Analytics to give you even more information about your visitors and only takes a few minutes to install. Clicky and other heat mapping tools can provide some invaluable insight into optimizing your site.
