Who are you and what are you currently working on?
I am Chanda Torrey, the CEO of Gifter World which is a website and blog for unique gifts for those who have everything. I am currently working on several gift guide blogs. I took a poll to ask my followers what types of gifts they are looking for, so I am catering to those requests. I am also always looking for additional unique products to feature or for video reviews.
How did you get started in affiliate marketing? What keeps you excited about it?
After working for nearly 20 years in the nonprofit sector, I retired about 1 1/2 years ago and it was great to relax for about 2 weeks. Then I started to feel like I needed something more. I had wanted to have a website for unique gifts for about 10 years, but I never had the time or energy. So suddenly, I had lots of time, so I dove head-first into learning how to create my affiliate site. I was super nervous at first because I had no idea how to start or what to do, but I am so glad I did it.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a newbie affiliate marketer? And what is one piece of advice they should ignore?
Set a date that you want to launch and put it in your calendar. Then work backwards to what you need to do and it will happen. Watch videos, read blogs, take online courses, and anything else you can find. When it comes time to start, Amazon Associates Program is the easiest to use for the first round of links you want to use but their percentage is low so make sure you use other companies as well. And be sure the company will be around and not stop doing affiliate partnerships. When I first started, I found a couple of items from a company I wanted to use and put the links on my site. Then they stopped doing affiliate partnerships completely which left me with dead links. So don’t just put any link on your site because it’s a pain to correct. As far as what advice to ignore? I think you need to listen to all of it and judge for yourself. Many people will tell you they can help you for a fee, but be wary and make sure they are legitimate because they may do more harm than good. Besides, you can do everything yourself, if you want.
What has been your favorite mistake? A mistake that in retrospect led to a great lesson and progress in your affiliate marketing?
After working on my website for a solid 6 weeks, I pushed a button that I shouldn’t have and my website disappeared and only had a giant ERROR on the screen. I thought that all of my hard work was gone forever. After panicking and calling everyone I could, I found out that it was because I tried to change the slug on my site and you can’t do that unless you are a professional web developer. I learned not to panic because chances are that no matter what I do, it can probably be fixed… and I learned to not touch the slug.
What is one piece of software or a web service (besides Geniuslink) that allows you to be more effective as an affiliate marketer?
I like using the Yoast plugin for SEO. It is basic enough for newbies and it guides me when I need to change something in order to improve SEO. Now it has become second nature, but it is still nice to have it as a reminder.
How do you continue to educate yourself as an affiliate marketer? What are some of your favorite resources for learning?
I am constantly reading and watching videos to learn more. I follow several Reddit groups (Juststart and SEO) Youtube videos and I enjoy taking Udemy online courses for topics that I need more in-depth learning. I took a pretty good SEO class on Udemy that was very helpful.
