Who are you and what are you currently working on?
I am Mfon Abel Ekene. Last year, I took a break from Trendiee which I founded and built to over 20,000 membership. Currently, I am working on TargetTrend.com formerly known as BloggingTools.org.
How did you get started in affiliate marketing? What keeps you excited about it?
For my first five sites, I never really considered affiliate marketing as a reliable source of revenue. Even though I knew about it. So, I mostly relied on Google AdSense and sponsored contents to monetize them.
Along the line, I signed up as an affiliate for a few programs but never really earned anything reasonable from them. Looking back now, I will say it’s because I never gave much attention to it.
It was when I sold 55% equity of a popular news site I owned and decided to start a personal finance blog that I found success with affiliate marketing.
The personal finance blog was getting reasonable traffic but AdSense earning was low. So I decided to pay attention to Affiliate marketing. I started earning from Affiliate programs.
But my major success with affiliate marketing was when a Cryptocurrency trading website reached out to me to become an affiliate. And suddenly, my affiliate earning was bigger than Google AdSense earning.
The amazing thing about Affiliate marking is you help people find relevant and excellent products or services, while you get paid for the effort. I spend a lot of time to test run my recommendations to ensure my followers will be happy with them.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a newbie affiliate marketer? And what is one piece of advice they should ignore?
The most important thing a newbie should learn to do is to be persistent. Like every venture, affiliate marketing has its own challenges. Unless you already have a large network, it might take a while to start earning as much as you will like to. Don’t be in a hurry to quit. Access yourself, read, learn and grow. You can change strategy if you need to but do not give up. Be persistent.
If anyone tells you that there is a quick way to make money from affiliate marketing like magic. Beware. As much as you should look out for uplifting information, there are a lot of lies out there just to sell stuff. Get rich quick schemes mostly don’t end well. Stay focus, build and grow.
What has been your favorite mistake? A mistake that in retrospect led to a great lesson and progress in your affiliate marketing?
After working on my website for a solid 6 weeks, I pushed a button that I shouldn’t have and my website disappeared and only had a giant ERROR on the screen. I thought that all of my hard work was gone forever. After panicking and calling everyone I could, I found out that it was because I tried to change the slug on my site and you can’t do that unless you are a professional web developer. I learned not to panic because chances are that no matter what I do, it can probably be fixed… and I learned to not touch the slug.
What is one piece of software or a web service (besides Geniuslink) that allows you to be more effective as an affiliate marketer?
Affiliate link management tool that helps me cloak affiliate links, track clicks and much more.
It just makes everything easier.
How do you continue to educate yourself as an affiliate marketer? What are some of your favorite resources for learning?
I read. I am always on the look out for ideas, trends and any beneficial information.
Since I do a lot of writing, it means I have to do a lot of researching and studies. That helps!
