An interview with Miguel Oña

Who are you, and what are you currently working on?

My name is Miguel Angel Perez Oña, I am working as Marketing Manager in Ecommerce of school supplies https://infanity.es. Also I have other websites as side projects, all of them based on travel and tourism. At the moment, these projects are a good income source. One of them is https://mejorepocapara.net.

How did you get started in affiliate marketing? What keeps you excited you about it?

For learning and to improve my skills, I started some blogs and side projects for learning. I decided to write about tourism and travel because it is my hobby and I travel as often as I can. Over time, my blogs have grown their followings and are getting more traffic and I started to think about how I could earn money with them. In travel you have many options for monetizing but I always try to offer to my visitors ads from things that they could need.
It started as a hobby, after going on holidays and now for earning money and traveling more than I used to.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to a newbie affiliate marketer? And what is one piece of advice they should ignore?

First, it’s important that you know your visitors and what they expect to get from your content and what things could help them related to your content. If you know this, then you can offer them the correct affiliate products, and your conversion will increase. For example, if people are researching a trip you can offer them flights and travel. But if your users are further into planning, you can offer rental cars, activities, hotels (because they probably already have their flight). So it’s important to know what your customers need to offer them the correct product.
But the best advice its to be very specific with your content, not to use wide content like “NYC Guide,” its would be better if you give solutions for more specific queries like: “How to visit Washington DC From NYC?” or “How can I save money in NYC?”.

What has been your favorite mistake? A mistake that, in retrospect, led to a great lesson and progress in your affiliate marketing?

It wasn’t exactly a mistake, but when I started with my blogs I didn’t believe in affiliate marketing, I just put up Adsense advertising and didn’t bother much with monetization. But when I had enough traffic, I realized I can earn more money with that number of visits and decided to try affiliate programs. I think I lost money by not trying it before, but it is also true that doing so and seeing results quickly made me trust and believe more in affiliate marketing.

What is one piece of software or a web service that allows you to be more effective as an affiliate marketer?

I really like Travelpayouts.com for flights (Kayak), hotels (Booking), transport (Omio), and rental cars.
And Civitatis for activities and tours in the Spanish language (All my blogs are in Spanish).
Both provide great tools for your website, customizable widgets, and deep links, so are both great options. And they are easy to use.

How do you continue to educate yourself as an affiliate marketer? What are some of your favorite resources for learning?

Every year I launch one or two new projects based on my experience, and this works to keep me up to date, learning new things and strategies. I am always SEO and Conversion focused. I like to test new things and projects in travel and tourism mainly.

If people wanted to connect with you, where should we point them to?

I have a personal blog where I talk about Woocommerce and SEO (seoaldia.com), but I don’t have enough time to keep up to date because I prefer to write and put my time into affiliate projects instead. But you can find me on seoaldia.com or Twitter as https://twitter.com/achuwoky
