Article: Affiliation for Every Developer

While the App Store Affiliate program is certainly gaining momentum among marketing- savvy appreneurs and game developers, it’s still very much underused as a means to collecting all of your app-generated revenue.

Our CEO and Co-Founder Jesse Lakes recently wrote a guest post for AppClover explaining the benefits of Apple’s built-in marketing tool.

In addition to allowing developers to capitalize on additional revenue from an activity they already do — linking to the App Store, Lakes discusses the affiliate program’s lesser-known benefit: tracking. He explains how developers can easily and effectively tag their affiliate links, thus enabling them to capture valuable user intent data that already existed. This can all be done from within an app, without interrupting the user experience and at no cost!

CEO – My Entrepreneurial Journey

“Keep moving forward. Keep innovating. If it doesn’t work, move on. Fail quickly. Whatever you’re going to do – just keep going…”

Once upon a time, GeoRiot was just a glimmer in Co-Founder / CEO Jesse Lakes’ eyes. A whitewater raft guide in Colorado by day, he lead thousands down the river – and never lost one! And as an entrepreneur at heart, he’d turn back to his laptop at night and continue work on his idea of the moment.

It was one of these projects, a book he wrote outlining the iTunes Affiliate Program, which caught the eye of the iTunes Marketing team.  Lakes was quickly recruited by Apple for his expertise and traded in his life jacket and side projects for his first ever cubicle, commute, and a regular paycheck.

Two years later, he passed on his dream gig as the Global Product Manager of Apple’s iTunes, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store Affiliate Program to pursue an idea that wouldn’t go away.

Recently, Jesse was invited to inspire budding entrepreneurs at one of IdeaMensch’s national IM48 events. Watch as he talks about bringing life to ideas, following your gut, and the evolution of ideas.

Improved Pre-Order Support

Thanks to the genius of our engineering team, we have just rolled out an improved translation algorithm for iTunes Pre-Order music links. You can now create dynamic Pre-Order links that support all international users and are maintenance free even after the album release date!

As anyone in the music industry knows, there are several challenges in linking to iTunes Pre-Order content. Pre-Order links are not supported by the iTunes tools, such as the Link Maker or Search API. Additionally, the album ID of a Pre-Order changes after the release date.

We are excited to continue to provide updates that improve conversion rates and international user experience. Contact us with any questions or for help creating Pre-Order links today!

Dashboard Refresh

We are excited to announce local time zone support, an updated reporting engine, and huge performance updates to our dashboard.

Timezone support ended up being a bigger project than we initially anticipated, but we’re happy to note that you can now select a timezone for your Key Stats and all hourly-based reports. Please note the reports built off daily stats (including the countries reports) will continue to be Pacific Standard Time based as we work toward a high-performance solution to allow reporting exclusively by the hour. Please give us a heads-up if you notice anything odd in the graphs or dashboard.

We’ve moved to a new charting library that we are very excited about. These charts are more zippy, “cleaner”, and packed full of cool features. Click and drag to zoom in, zoom out by clicking “Zoom Out”, and when a legend is available you can click each item to hide/ show it on the graph.

A couple weeks ago a new client commented on the speed of the dashboard… and we listened. While nowhere close to the speed of the GeoRiot service, we are happy to report that page load times in the dashboard should be a fraction of what they were previously. In addition to a general house cleaning, we’ve also moved to a distributed model for the dashboard (similar to the service) which will also greatly decrease ping times around the world.

We have new reports and some big enhancements lined up for the summer, so stay tuned! If you’re interested in joining our Beta testing group, drop us a line.

As always, please let us know what you’d like to see added to the GeoRiot dashboard.
