My name is Robin Young, and I am currently working on Fitness Savvy – a price comparison site in the UK and US for supplements, fitness equipment, and sportswear.
How did you get started in affiliate marketing? What keeps you excited about it?
I started affiliate marketing in 2017. It was by chance, as I was looking to compare supplement prices and find deals and realized that a suitable platform did not exist.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to a newbie affiliate marketer? And what is one piece of advice they should ignore?
Concentrate on content before chasing backlinks. I spent the first two years reaching out go get links, however, the content on the site was causing ranking issues in search engines.
What has been your favorite mistake? A mistake that in retrospect led to a great lesson and progress in your affiliate marketing?
I hired a bad freelance writer who caused issues with the site (spun content which still passed Copyscape). I then hired another writer to re-write the copy, and put in place new processes and procedures to ensure content is of higher quality. The issues caused a drop in rankings which made me look at other areas of the site to improve our website quality. The result was a much more useful site with more robust processes.
What is one piece of software or a web service (besides Geniuslink) that allows you to be more effective as an affiliate marketer?
I use Ahrefs to help me with the SEO side of things – it is a great tool for looking at the competition and getting ideas for content and backlinks.
How do you continue to educate yourself as an affiliate marketer? What are some of your favorite resources for learning?
My primary revenue sources is through SEO and email marketing, so I spend a lot of time reading blogs by Brian Dean and on Ahrefs to further my SEO knowledge.
