Article: Affiliation for Every Developer

While the App Store Affiliate program is certainly gaining momentum among marketing- savvy appreneurs and game developers, it’s still very much underused as a means to collecting all of your app-generated revenue.

Our CEO and Co-Founder Jesse Lakes recently wrote a guest post for AppClover explaining the benefits of Apple’s built-in marketing tool.

In addition to allowing developers to capitalize on additional revenue from an activity they already do — linking to the App Store, Lakes discusses the affiliate program’s lesser-known benefit: tracking. He explains how developers can easily and effectively tag their affiliate links, thus enabling them to capture valuable user intent data that already existed. This can all be done from within an app, without interrupting the user experience and at no cost!

Once upon a time, GeoRiot was just a glimmer in Co-Founder / CEO Jesse Lakes’ eyes. A whitewater raft guide in Colorado by day, he lead thousands down the river – and never lost one! And as an entrepreneur at heart, he’d turn back to his laptop at night and continue work on his idea of the moment.

It was one of these projects, a book he wrote outlining the iTunes Affiliate Program, which caught the eye of the iTunes Marketing team.  Lakes was quickly recruited by Apple for his expertise and traded in his life jacket and side projects for his first ever cubicle, commute, and a regular paycheck.

Two years later, he passed on his dream gig as the Global Product Manager of Apple’s iTunes, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store Affiliate Program to pursue an idea that wouldn’t go away.

Recently, Jesse was invited to inspire budding entrepreneurs at one of IdeaMensch’s national IM48 events. Watch as he talks about bringing life to ideas, following your gut, and the evolution of ideas.

Maximize Revenue: 2nd Tier Clicks

“2nd Tier” clicks are clicks that originate from either 1) a country without a local storefront or 2) a country without an affiliate program.

Typically, 2nd Tier clicks don’t produce revenue because there isn’t a local affiliate program. However, it’s become common practice for consumers in countries without an iTunes / App Store presence or with a minimal presence (eg, no music store) to make purchases from a larger country’s store.

Now, GeoRiot offers the ability to specify an affiliate program to use for all clicks originating from countries without an affiliate program. By setting your 2nd Tier click preferences, you can decide how these clicks will be handled and further monetize your existing traffic.

Where can I set my preference for 2nd tier clicks?
The “Affiliation Preference” feature is found under “Actions” on the “Manage Traffic Sources” page, allows you to specify the affiliate program to use for 2nd Tier clicks.

Where is a user routed if they have a local storefront but no affiliate program?
For clicks originating from countries with an iTunes / App Store storefront, consumers are routed to their local stores but their link will be affiliated for affiliate program you select.

Where is a user routed when they don’t have a local storefront?
For clicks originating from countries without an iTunes / App Store storefront, consumers are routed to the storefront corresponding to the affiliate program you selected.

While most clients will likely send their “2nd Tier” clicks to the United States (LinkShare), you may find that a different setup maximizes your conversions. We would love to hear about what works best for you.

As you may be aware, a deep link from one country’s iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore may not work in another country’s store. If the link doesn’t work, the international user is greeted with an error and never arrives at the item of interest in their store. This is not the ideal user experience.

Have you ever wondered exactly how many countries your affiliated or raw iTunes links will fail in? Now you can find out– and see exactly how GeoRiot can improve your link’s performance.

Our new iTunes Availability Tool (beta) evaluates a link’s global footprint. Discover which of the 123 storefronts worldwide will support the link, or affiliate the click, and which will not. For each link, you can view the results in a color-coded, interactive map as well as a table of results by country. Further, you can toggle to a second map to view the new global footprint of the same link when using the GeoRiot service.
