How Tapdaq Uses GeoRiot: iTunes App Store Affiliate Insights

I’m sure you may be asking yourself, “Who are Tapdaq?” So, let’s start by answering that question.

Tapdaq is a community of developers who exchange insights and installs to help each other build better applications and acquire users, for no cost.

Ultimately, we believe developers who build high quality applications should have a fair opportunity to succeed, and from the start, GeoRiot has been helping us to achieve this.

The problem

Back in December 2012, when we originally started building Tapdaq, we decided to explore whether affiliate earnings could help to boost our future revenues. Whilst it soon became apparent that the actual earnings per click would only amount to worthwhile cash when (and if) we built to huge scale, we soon noticed that there was a bigger issue at play.

There are 147 different countries in Apple’s iTunes affiliate marketing program (Related: “iTunes Affiliate Program Grows 20 Countries Stronger”), and each one of them has one or more different stores. To manually create all of these links, keep them up to date, and maintain a script that accurately directed people to the right store would just be too much for us to do as a small team.

So, we hand this work over to GeoRiot.

The Solution: Localizing Links

For any developer or network that is sending a large amount of traffic to the App Store, localizing links is essential for two reasons:

Improved UX

Attempting to link a US based user to an application in the Russian App Store often leads to a bad user experience, as users are presented with an error message about the app not being available in their store.

Every interstitial advertisement we deliver across the Tapdaq network is connected to a GeoRiot Intelligent Link. This means that regardless of where someone is when they view an advertisement on our network, they are always directed to the right App Store when they tap on the interstitial.

Being directed to the right store not only means that we avoid the dreaded screen shown above, it also ensures that users who do reach the iTunes sales page are shown the app’s meta content in their own language.

No more missed commissions

As well as guaranteeing that ad links remain functional for all users on Tapdaq, GeoRiot also ensures that you are not missing out on valuable affiliate earnings from that link.

By removing dead links from the network, we can be confident that we get commission for any purchases the ad viewer makes on the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore over the next 24 hours.

Our advice for new App Store affiliate marketers

On our journey to date, we have learnt several key points about affiliate marketing on the iTunes App Store. Our top three tips are:

  • Don’t over estimate your average EPC on affiliated links. Whilst affiliate revenue can amount to more significant figures when sending traffic to Apple on mass scale, it often takes up to half a million referral clicks/taps to reach $1,000 in affiliate revenue. As such, using GeoRiot’s smart linking is an essential step in ensuring you don’t miss any revenue.
  • If you are not an ad network and you are just promoting products within your own app/products, then make sure you cover all bases. This includes social posts, email newsletters and your website. Due to the point mentioned above, you need to make sure you are spreading your affiliate links at every opportunity.
  • This tip could be included in the above point, but we thought it deserved it’s own. If you are promoting your application(s) through mobile advertising networks, then many of these allow you to input your own iTunes affiliate link. One example of this can be found on Chartboost…
