The Geniuslink team is thrilled to announce support for the Etsy Affiliate Program! Headquartered in Brooklyn, Etsy.com provides an online space where individuals can create and sell hand crafted retail items. A top-tier marketplace for boutique entrepreneurs, Etsy remains one of the most trusted spaces for listing products lovingly forged over nights and weekends. With the new Etsy + Geniuslink integration, it’s simpler than ever to build Etsy affiliate links and earn commissions!
Etsy was founded in 2005 by a trio of software developers in New York who called themselves IOspace. They built Etsy over two months after spending time getting to know the community of getcrafty.com, which they had been contracted to redesign. They learned that so many of the crafters were looking for help setting up a store as they didn’t want to use eBay. By the middle of 2007, Etsy had logged its one millionth sale, and expected to double milestone within 6 months. Things really started to take off.
It seems that the IOspace trio has succeeded in their goal of supporting the getcrafty.com community. Etsy acts as a resource to starting a business without a dedicated website, and by catering to this need they’ve seen explosive growth over the past 10 years. Everybody knows somebody who runs an Etsy store. They’ve played a massive role cementing the concept of ‘crafty side hustle’ into the collective consciousness of western internet culture.
On Etsy you can find all manner of handmade goods both utilitarian and chic, vintage items and fashion, quality crafting supplies, bespoke cosplay gear, 3d printed tchotchkes and parts, and much more. It’s a gift shopper’s paradise.
In 2013, Etsy’s CEO at the time Chad Dickerson famously said. “At the end of every transaction, you get something real from a real person. There is an existential satisfaction to that.” and called Etsy “a platform that provides meaning to people, and an opportunity to validate their art, their craft”. Lovely stuff!
Etsy.com snags the 4th spot in the Marketplace subcategory of Ecom and Shopping, according to SimilarWeb. They hold a global rank of 70th, and a country rank of 31st for the US. Not too shabby!
The Etsy Affiliate Program
The Etsy Affiliate Program is a fitting alternative for anyone focused on broadening their reach beyond the Amazon Associates program. Perhaps you’re a wedding stylist with an Instagram feed, a hunter of vintage/retro treasures, a blogger obsessed with the nerd-o-sphere, or an interior decorator? If so, then look no further! The Etsy Affiliate program—conceived by Awin back in 2015—is waiting to pull you into a warm embrace (where you’ll be squeezed between a customized apron and a pair of sailor merman oven mitts).
In our Quantifying the Affiliate Landscape Blog (written in 2018), Etsy’s affiliate program ranked 8th—beating out the Microsoft Store and Google Play!
Commission Rates and Cookie Windows
Etsy affiliate links will earn you 4% commission across the board. Amazon’s own rate for items sold in the ‘handmade’ category is higher, at 5%. Based on the commission rate alone, you could be earning more from Amazon links.
However, Etsy truly takes the wedding cake when it comes to the length of their affiliate cookie window. You can earn commission from Etsy affiliate links up to 30 days after the click takes place. Amazon’s cookie window is locked in at just 24 hours, making Etsy the far and away winner in this category.
To give you an idea of what to expect out of your Etsy affiliate links, Sovrn//Commerce (fka VigLink) reports an average commission rate of 4.99%, an average conversion rate of 1.69%, and an average basket size of $29.74. At the time of writing this piece, Skimlinks does not have a partnership with the Etsy affiliate program. While affiliate aggregator platforms like these offer a convenient way to participate in an abounding horde of affiliate programs with a single application, you’ll always take home more of your Etsy earnings by working directly through Awin!
How the Etsy Affiliate Program handles international purchases
There are presently eight affiliate programs for Etsy listed within the Awin dashboard: the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Australia, the EU, and a ‘Rest of World’ catch-all program for everyone else not covered. Thankfully, you only need to register for the affiliate program associated with your home country and you’ll be able to earn affiliate commissions from all the other regions as well. That’s right, your Awin Affiliate ID for just one program can be applied to Etsy affiliate links that redirect to any of these regional storefronts!
Etsy Affiliate Program + Geniuslink
Now, Awin’s dashboard is pretty solid and features a modern user interface. They make it relatively painless to generate an Etsy affiliate link or a banner ad. But wouldn’t it be nice if we could save you a step in that whole process? Now that our dashboard supports Awin’s Etsy affiliate program, you can easily create an Etsy affiliate link with Geniuslink alone. All you’ve got to do is provide us with a raw product URL from Etsy.com, and we’ll speed your workflow up by converting it into an affiliate link for you. (Our Chrome Extension makes this even easier!)
You’ve probably heard by now, but we’ve named this functionality “auto-affiliation” and it’s dead simple to get set up. All you need to do is grab your Affiliate ID from the Awin dashboard and input it to the Affiliate page of the Geniuslink Dashboard, after selecting “Etsy US (AWIN)”. Once we’ve got that number in our system, any time you build a geni.us link to a Etsy.com product, we’ll make sure your affiliate parameters are included automatically as part of the redirect.
Please note that you can also monetize Etsy links through Sovrn//Commerce, thanks to the Geniuslink + Affiliate Aggregator support that we offer for both Sovrn and Skimlinks. There are plenty of benefits to using Sovrn//Commerce (including a 1% higher commission rate in this case!), but in all likelihood you’ll earn more through Awin directly. You’ll keep 100% of the commissions you generate through your Etsy links by signing up directly with Awin and adding your Affiliate ID into the Geniuslink dashboard (as opposed to the roughly 75% that you take home when using an affiliate aggregator).
Ready to take action? Next we’re going to highlight two approaches to help you get the most out of combining Geniuslink with the Etsy Affiliate Program. You can easily diversify your affiliate revenue streams by supplementing your existing Amazon affiliate links with Etsy affiliate links (as long as the products are offered by both retailers). Just follow these simple steps.
Now more than ever, retailer curation and choice are beneficial for your shoppers and, by extension, you! Choice Pages enable you to promote a single product available at multiple storefronts, and thanks to a newer feature, they’re easier to build than ever! Providing your visitors with alternate retailers improves their shopping experience, and you’ll still monetize the sale no matter where they end up purchasing from. You can find more info on how to set up a Choice Page in our Knowledge Base.

With a Choice Page, you can promote Amazon and Etsy affiliate links alongside one another in a clean, intuitive way and diversify your affiliate revenue—which from our research helps increase your affiliate earnings! Additionally, to make creating a Choice Page even more simple and straightforward, our Product Suggestions feature allows you to easily find products across multiple storefronts, including Etsy!
A/B Split Links
We all know that the Amazon.com Associates program is one of the more popular ways to monetize US-based traffic. Thai said, we still encourage you to run a controlled experiment to discover if it’s truly the best option for your audience and the products you’re promoting. Our A/B Split Test links provide a methodology to compare the performance of two or more affiliate programs using just one link!
If you wanted to evaluate the benefit of replacing your Amazon affiliate links with another affiliate program (like Etsy!), you could leverage the power of a A/B Split test link. This allows you to compare the performance of Amazon’s Affiliate Program to the Etsy Affiliate Program through the same link, so you can make an informed decision on how heavily to promote each retailer.
Now that we’re supporting Awin’s Etsy Affiliate Program, the total number of affiliate programs we support has climbed to 34!
Additionally, now that our Suggestions feature (which automatically fetches Etsy product links) makes it even faster to assemble multi-retailer Choice Pages, we’re very eager to keep that number growing.
Please stay tuned to our lovely blog as the year rolls on so you’ll always be in the know as we add support for even more great affiliate programs!
